Aeration - Residential

Are you wondering why your lawn looks dull even after watering? Does your neighbour’s lawn look rich and thick?

Aeration

Aeration is the most important, low cost maintenance service that you do for your lawn. Aeration can take that average lawn and transform it into something beautiful. The process involves hollow rods to penetrate into the grass and its root mass, down into the soil. Cores are then extracted out and distributed across the surface of your lawn. The cores Core Aerationwill deteriorate, leaving vital nutrients on the surface. The holes created, let in water and allow the soil to become easily saturated .The soil now like a sponge, expands. This softens the ground and lets the roots of the grass push easily through the soil. This in combination with a fertilizer Program allows the lawn to rapidly flourish and become strong and healthy. All you need to do is add the water.

Benefits

  • Lets water penetrate the surface to the roots.
  • The water does not run off before it can absorb. This saves on the amount of water.
  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
  • Loosens the soil so that the lawn can easily grow and flourish.
  • Allows fertilizer to get to the roots.
  • Softens the ground and prevents injuries.
  • Increases drought stress tolerance.
  • It cuts through the thatch layer which prevent disease and insects infestation.

Tips and tricks:

Aeration
  • If your lawn is hard and compacted from frequent use and/or poor soil, please water your lawn in the days prior to your appointment. You may need to water it in short time frames. "Think of the soil as a dry sponge. The first time you pour water on it, the water runs off, leaving only the surface damp. With each watering the sponge absorbs more and more until it is saturated."
  • Set up your sprinkler and let it run for about 20 minutes.
  • If you see the water running off, move your sprinkler to another location's on your lawn. Alternate between different areas. Take a 6 inch screwdriver and slide it into the ground. If you need to apply a lot of downward pressure, Continue watering. Once the screwdriver can penetrate the ground to the full length, you are finished. This allows our machines to pull out large cores evenly across the entire lawn.
  • Let the surface of the ground dry out between waterings. (This time varies greatly - dependant on environmental conditions) Usually 1 or 2 waterings a week is enough. This time water all at once. Remember "water is attracted to water" The sub-surface of your lawn should still be moist and water will move down and the holes and along with the loose soil will get it to where it is needed.
  • The Greenskepers will try and book most aerations for rain days. This helps out with this process. It saves time and water to the owners/manager. It also keeps us busy when the rain is falling.
